The Capitol Environs Commission was formed in 1987 to formalize the preservation of the architect’s original vision for the Capitol Building & its surroundings. Bertram Goodhue’s 1920 plan for the Capitol Building included 4 boulevards emanating in all 4 cardinal directions, and planned views of the building from both near and far. The commission has statutory authority over the Capitol Environs District, a 54 square block area. Building heights, setbacks, materials & landscapes are just some of the regulations that the commission oversees.

The City’s Historic Preservation Commission works with community organizations on zoning and incentives to protect & revitalize historic districts.
